NOTD: Happy Chinese new year nails feat. China Glaze, Orly and a bit of Essie

Sunday, February 10, 2013

Today is the start of Chinese new year so that calls for a new year manicure. I used red and gold as the main colours since they symbolise good luck in Chinese culture. This year is the year of the snake so I wanted to include some sort of snake design but my image plates and selected polish weren't working very well together, in the end I left it out.

On my index finger I used two coats of Essie's Blanc and did a water marble design on top with China Glaze's Poinsettia and Orly's Flare. Maybe I should have used Poinsettia as the base because the white seems to have lightened the red and made it look a little pink. In person the difference is a little more obvious.

I've done a simple nail art design using CG's Poinsettia before which you can view HERE.

Both photos taken indoors. Natural lighting

Using the glitters from CG's Solar flare I did a glitter border and hand drew the Chinese character Fú 福 in the middle which means good fortune. I originally wanted to stamp the character on using one of the bundle monster image plates but I didn't have the right gold polish for stamping. Orly's Flare just refused to show up well so I gave up on the idea and wrote it myself. After years of leaving Chinese school my Chinese writing skills isn't bad.

On my accent nail I used CG's blonde bombshell over my red base. At first I used Solar flare to make it look as if the nail was topped with 'gold coins' but the glitters were just too sparse for layering. I redid the whole nail with blonde bombshell which is perfect, it gives that sprinkling gold look.

Both photos taken outdoors. Slightly blurry because I was shivering. It was COLD!

Also, If you haven't noticed I made a small change to my blog. I've been meaning to rename it for a while already but I haven't managed to come up with a name I was really happy about. That doesn't mean I’m exactly satisfied with the new one I came up with but it contains my name and gives a brief idea of what my blog is about so I’ll stick with it. Other than the new blog name and header, I also learnt how to edit the curved text watermark on my photos using gimp, that means a little more protection for my photos.

What do you think of my CNY manicure? Whether you celebrate it or not, how are you spending CNY? :D
